What is Backflow?
A Backflow condition occurs when the SA Water Corporation water supply to a property has been compromised due to a loss of mains water pressure and a reversal of water flow or drawn back (siphonage) occurs from a possible polluted water source that could contain the following,
- Chemical mixtures,
- Used water,
- Commercial or industrial liquids, and or
- Any other non-drinkable water back into the drinkable water system.

If you require any further information on backflow prevention, or you have a backflow device that requires testing, please give us a call or send us an email or fill in the contact us form.
This reversal of flow or siphonage of the above potential contaminants causes the drinkable water to be contaminated and creating a situation called cross-contamination. As a result of this, backflow has the potential to be a severe health risk to you and others.
Examples of probable sources of cross-contamination are:
- Bidet’s and toilets modified with a bidet toilet seat or douche spray,
- Rainwater systems with mains water back-ups,
- Manufacturing plants,
- Cafés and commercial kitchens with pre-rinse dishwashing systems,
- Wash down tap adjacent to a grease arrestor or any other trade waste pre-treatment device,
- Irrigation systems,
- Swimming pools,
- Evaporative air-conditioning units,
- Wash bays for vehicles, bins etc,
- Chemical injection areas,
- Fire hose reels and booster assemblies,
- Schools, kindergartens and childcare,
- Hotels and motels,
- Medical and dental clinics,
- Mechanics,
- Dry cleaners and commercial laundries/laundromats, and
- Sporting clubs.
Backflow Preventer
A backflow preventer is a device that’s installed on your home or business’s water pipes, which allows water to flow in one direction but never in backwards. Its only job is to prevent drinking water from being contaminated due to backflow.
Every property owner has a responsibility to ensure that the correct backflow device is installed on your property. The purpose of a backflow prevention device is to ensure that water from the property cannot draw back into the drinking water supply. The type of backflow prevention device that is required for a property depends upon the risk rating of the property with the potential hazard.
