What is Trade Waste

Trade waste is defined as liquid wastewater generated within commercial or industrial properties that’s discharged into sewer other than human liquid wastewater, e.g. toilets and handwash basins. Liquid waste can include grease, oils, chemicals and solid particles, and if not managed properly, these contaminants could cause damage and degradation to SA Water’s sewer infrastructure.

In South Australia, all trade waste is monitored and administered by the SA Water Corporation and local councils outside of SA Water Corporations jurisdiction. Businesses such as cafés, restaurants, laundromats, mechanics, vehicle and equipment wash bays etc all need a form of pre-treatment device to treat liquid wastewater prior to its discharge to the SA Water sewer system.

What is required for your trade waste?

To determine the type and size of trade waste pre-treatment device you require, you will need to lodge an application and pay a fee to SA Water or your local council.

Head to the SA Water website here to complete the forms or print a pdf form for your complex or non-complex business.

The following information is required to be provided to SA Water:

  • Business name, location and contact details.
  • Type of business activity e.g. café, bakery, food retailer, car wash etc.
  • Details of the proposed activity for your business e.g. If you’re a café or restaurant, the number of plumbing fixtures, the estimated number of meals and seating and opening hours. If you’re a dentist then the number of dental chairs etc.
  • Details of the proposed pre-treatment system.
  • For complex systems, you will need to provide contaminants likely to be present in the trade waste that is discharged to the sewer.

At Adelaide Trade Waste, we provide can provide comprehensive consultation service to assist with the lodging of your trade waste application and any liaising with SA Water trade waste inspectors or the Office of the Technical Regulator to ensure that the system installed is the most efficient and cost-effective for your establishment.

There are financial penalties for not installing a pre-treatment device for your business as it may be causing damage to your internal and external plumbing by allowing grease, oil, chemical and sediment waste into SA Water’s sewer system.
